I recount spending excessive hours studying and reviewing information presented in a traditional book format. I never scored above a B+ on a test and at the moment cannot recall one important fact about the Italian Renaissance. The traditional delivery of sitting in a dark room viewing countless slides did more harm than good. By creating a timeline I realized that I had been cheated of vital information. The timeline improved my memorization and understanding of important monuments such as the Great Stone Tower and the Great Pyramids. The use of video, photo and virtual devices in the art history classroom will help build an understanding of a modern society that is built on layers of history.

Art Through Time presents a virtual timeline that will enhance the art history experience for people interested in art, particularly students in high school and college. Students will not be required to rely on the traditional textbook as the only source of knowledge because the timeline animates the traditional textbook. The timeline is supplemented with videos, links, and photos. The timeline will lead the curious and not-so-curious mind through pivotal events in world history.

The timeline covers work from the Paleolithic art period to the Graffiti art movement. I browsed many museum websites, textbooks, and articles in search of an array of information. I believe the videos demanded most of my time because I listened to each one in entirety and most of the videos were about 5 to 10 minutes long. One of the videos that I planned to embed in the timeline on Egyptian art transitioned from an informative and classic tale of the pyramids to a cult-like proclamation of race and identity. Assuming that I might use this timeline with future classes, I was truly glad that I reviewed each video. The timeline is public and open for the world to see. I could not imagine a student or a parent of a student watching a slanderous video that I unassumingly advocated.

Even though I enjoyed the process and was able to fine-tune my knowledge of art history, I faced many challenges. The events could not be categorized by year, which forced me to use a standard date such as Jan. 1 for each event. I was unable to upload more than one image or embed more than one video, which caused much frustration. I either used the most popular image or work to represent the art period or created multiple entries relative to one art period. The dates in art history became more important and relative to the movement. I was able to see the connection between art movements such as Paleolithic art and Graffiti art.

The activity of creating a timeline will improve memorization and the student ability to connect with the art movements. I enjoyed the creation of the timeline as well as the viewing. During the process of creating the timeline I began to consider the multiple uses of a timeline in the traditional classroom setting. The students can learn from the viewing of the timeline but will benefit most if it is required of them to create a timeline on specific art periods assigned by the teacher. I am concerned a little due to the ease of copying and pasting information.

Narrative....blah!

I attempted to browse independently to find interactive narratives but I was not successful. Radha did a spectacular job finding helpful sources. I revisited her blog and I remain impressed. Not that my endorsement is a sign of worthiness but her blog post on interactive narrative is definitely 'cream of the crop'. I tested a few narratives in search of the easiest to maneuver. Campaign rush seemed to be the most challenging. My adventure began with an overwhelming excitement to 'post-participate' in the campaign. After five minutes I was overcome with unpleasant emotions. Scratching my brain and questioning the resourcefulness of the tool I concluded that the purpose of the narrative was to expose potential workers to the fatigue that present campaign workers went through. I was not amused or excited at the end.

Hurricane Katrina Tempest In Crescent City was a very strange narrative. It was very hard to guide the character through the city by using four arrows and a space bar. This could work as a teaching tool. The student or participant can pick and chose who to interact with which determines the character's ability to move to the next level. The narrative begins with a comic book excerpt which introduces the participant to the purpose of the game.

Darfur is Dying presented an interactive, game-like narrative story. I learned more from this narrative than the ones listed above. The participant is introduced to a large family of characters. I chose a 12-year old girl named Abok. Attempting to guide Abok to the well for water was more difficult than I thought. I failed but learned a lesson. Children and adult women are raped and abused in Darfur. At the end of the journey a passage pops onto the screen informing me that I can help the people in Darfur. I felt more connected to the content due to the presentation. The narrative requires the participant to act or play and through play the participant is exposed to the pain and suffering of the people in Darfur.

Live on Web

A young man committed suicide in front of a virtual audience. 12 hours before the incident he broadcasted the suicide plan on his blog. Before committing suicide he corresponded with members on the site. He received questions like: How many pills are you going to take? The virtual audience members were filled with mixed reactions. Some encouraged the young man to kill himself while others tried to persuade him otherwise. Some viewers believed it was a hoax. Abraham Biggs, a 19 year old college student, was not kidding. He was found dead in his father's bed. Approximately, 1500 viewers witnessed the suicide, the police were not alerted until 12 hours later.

After I read the article, I had to take a breath of fresh air. I am currently speechless. I question Abraham's motives. Why did he need an audience? If he had no access to a web cam what other approaches may he have taken? Was he currently taking medication for his Bipolar disorder? Did the virtual audience comfort him during the process? Abraham interacted with other virtual members, is the world really that cold-hearted? As I recall the Virginia Tech incident, I am reminded of the young man who videotaped himself before going on a killing rampage that ended in his own suicide. Is this similar? If not how is this different? Is there a connection between Abraham's suicide and people who jump off bridges?

Montana Miller, an assistant professor of popular culture, was not surprised by the webcam suicide given the way teenagers share certain aspects of their life on social networks. She said if teenagers did not have the option of documenting or recording an event in their life, nothing would seem worthwhile. A lawyer in Florida stated that the website is not in trouble for negligence and the members of the blog will not be held liable for their comments and lack of action.

In Japan, people are posting suicide pacts online. A group of people set a time in which they will commit suicide together. Japan reports that the trend is growing and will continue to grow. Thirty-seven of the 91 individuals who committed suicide were female and forty-four were male. Of these individuals, forty percent were in their 20's, thirty-nine percent were in their 30's, while eight between the ages of 10 and 19 committed suicide after signing an online death pact. In South Korea, the government wants to regulate the internet but there are several laws that ban this idea. The South Korean government hopes to require members of chat rooms to use their real name so that it will be quicker and easier to punish cyberattackers. The floor leader of the Grand National Party wants to "keep cyberspace from becoming a public toilet wall." Opposers of this initiative believe the government is trying to suppress the Internet public opinion that is critical of the government.

Researchers from the University of Bristol, Oxford, recreated a typical web search by someone looking for details on suicide. They used 12 different search terms in four popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Ask and MSN. After sifting through the results, they analyzed the top ten sites from each of the twelve search terms. The search results: 240 distinctive sites about suicide with just under half providing information about how to commit suicide, one- fifth of the hits were recurring sites that promoted suicide, 13% of the sites were dedicated to suicide prevention, and only 12% actively discouraged suicide. Sites that offered suicide prevention detailed ways to commit suicide. Someone looking for details on suicide is more likely to come across sites that promote suicide than those that promote prevention.

Puppy Cam

Six Shiba Inu puppies are engaging millions of viewers. Many have reported watching the Puppy Cam while at work and others say the puppies bring back sweet memories. At 9:30 am the Puppy Cam begins to monitor Autumn, Ayumi, Amaya (the females), Aki, Akoni, and Ando (the males). The Puppy Cam is trained to focus on the puppies, a comfy basket, and play area. Viewers can view the Shiba Inu puppies sleeping, playing, and eating. As I am watching now, I see a barefoot person in the gated area cleaning the mats. Adorable footage. It is worth checking out. It is an online library with more than 1, 500 free resources. I took a quick glance at the site. I did not have time to join but I was able to view up to 7 lessons without a membership. By the way, memberships are free. The content was accurate and comprehensive. A member is allowed to remix capabilities, download and share material on the website. The lesson plans are detailed and clear. The plans include links to videos, websites, vocabulary, materials, grade levels and suggested time. Teachersdomain.org provides cross-curricular instruction to impact the learning experience for the students and illustrates easy and simple ways digital media is used today.
***** (5 stars)

I was introduced to Teachersdomain.org by reading an article on Reuters.org. The article discussed the impact of a new touch screen technology used in the classroom by many educators to keep the students engaged with the material. Smartboards create a two-way connection to learning and teaching. In the Article Digital Media and Touch Screen Technology: An Increasing Trend in Education Eleri Merrikin states, " Students today learn with media and technology because they've grown up in a multimedia world, so these resources are something they relate to easily." Smartboards or white boards are known to captivate students by use of their finger as a cursor. The white boards are available in a variety of sizes, allow you to save information in a snapshot, use your finger as a writing utensil and much much more.

Somehow I landed on a website detailing information about a "media on wheels" that could be rolling along the curb of your school. On September 15, 2008, The Kennedy Center and Daimler Financial announced the plan for a ground-breaking arts education program. The Kennedy Center in partnership with Daimler Financial is seeking applications from schools across the country to participate in On Location: Spotlight in Your Community. Ten schools will be accepted. If you are interested I think there is still time to apply.

The benefits of On Location: Spotlight in Your Community:

0 The Thomas Built Bus "media studio on wheels" will visit each of the ten schools selected for two weeks.

0 The Thomas Built Bus will be on site from January to June 2009.

0 The students will document an artist or arts group from their community using digital media.

0 A team of trained, theater and media professionals will guide the students and teachers through the process of developing the documentary.

0 The documentary will be showcased on the On Location: Spotlight in Your Community website to showcase the rich diversity of arts in the communities of the United States of America.

0 Online curricular support and in-person learning opportunities will be provided for students and teachers.

0 Each of the ten schools will receive a media equipment package including a computer, software, video recording gear and $1,000 to support further development of the new digital arts and humanities program.
This program reminded me of bookmobiles. Bookmobiles are libraries with wheels. Today bookmobiles travel to provide literature and digital technology to Spanish speaking communities, elders living in assisted care communities and homeschool families. The bookmobiles are usually wheelchair accessible.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; A 49 year old woman by the name of Lori Drew sent her a message that entailed, "the world would be better off without you." Lori bullied Megan Meier sending her cruel messages by using a false identity. I presume that Megan had no idea that the person sending her the email was actually a 49 year old woman. Lori Drew is the mother of Megan's former friend. At the time of this incident Megan was being treated for depression.

On November 10, 2008, a US District Judge announced that he may exclude the evidence of Megan's suicide from the case. Lori is being accused of cyber-bullying but the government is prosecuting Lori under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act is used to prosecute hackers and those who commit high-tech crimes. The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act was passed by the United States Congress in 1986 and amended in 1994, 1996, and 2001 by the USA Patriot Act. Lori's attorney argues that cyber-bullying is not a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

Children are not the only victims of cyber-bullying. Teachers are victims as well. There is a website, RateMyTeachers.com where students can rate their teachers ability using a anonymous profile. A teacher by the name of Mr. Brown accessed the website and was surprised by what he found. RateMyTeachers.com was not excited about being connected to cyber-bullying. They claim that the sole purpose of the site is to show "who is connected with their students and who really doesn't care." That was not a good argument for me. Teachers are accessing the site and left in tears after reading the content. The site argues that the students are strictly commenting on their teachers ability to educate. Who would ever put that responsibility in the hands of a student? A student may not like a teacher because he or she has red hair or wears "high-water" jeans.

What is cyber-bullying? "Cyber-bullying is when a person is threatened, embarrassed, tormented, humiliated, or harassed by another person using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones". A cyber-bully does not have a specific profile. There is story about a teenage boy, who is an honor student. He does not cause his parents any trouble and he is very polite. He shared that when he accessed the Internet he sent death threats via email. He thought it might be cool to act his fantasies out online.

There are several websites for children, parents and educators to access for information on this issue. Sites such as STOP cyberbullying (offers vital information for teachers, parents and children), Cyberbully.org (offers resources for educators), Cyberbullying.info (offers an interactive information site for everyone), and WiredSafety.org (helps victims of cyber-bullying find their stalkers and prosecute them.)

Consequences of cyber-bullying: On Techdirect.com there is an article discussing a recent decision that details the reason Canadian teachers want cyber-bullying to be a criminal offense. According to the Christian Science Monitor (I encourage you to visit this site, and browse the article. It is truly informative), teachers are striking back on online pranks. Teenagers are paying the price for their actions through criminal arrests. Some argue that this is unnecessary and going too far. What do you think? Should cyber-bullying be dismissed as a simple act of playfulness or have students gone too far? One-third of American teens regularly post unsuitable language and manipulated images on the web. Twenty-six percent of teachers and principals are targeted. Forty-five states have cyber-stalking laws and 11 states prohibit cyber-bullying. In 2006, 80 percent of students reported cyber-bullying. Will these laws stop students from participating in cyber-bullying? I don't think so. Many people do not obey the laws that exist today. On the Christian Science Monitor site there is a article that shares a story about a parent who videotaped a teachers bottom, uploaded it on the internet and even titled the video "Hot for Teacher." As an educator, how might you respond to cyber-bullying if you happen to be the victim?

Sequential Innovation

The World Wide Web is an interactive community filled with millions and millions of users. The World Web Wide sponsors an environment where people can collaborate with each other by sharing ideas, and new innovations. So that is where sequential innovation comes in. I was reading the article and I was filled with tons of questions. I questioned the use of strict intellectual property laws and the purpose of taking legal action against a competitive company. The traditional intellectual property hinders the production of new ideas and the sharing of information. Was it necessary for EMI to take legal action against OLGA? I don't think so. I agree with the authors of the article. EMI could have learned from OLGA's reinterpretation of the guitar tablature site. Was OLGA a creative imitation of EMI? Is all of the legal action driven by greed, selfishness, and fear? An idea has to start somewhere but it takes a team to help an idea flourish and develop. I understand the author and artist fury with the murkiness of blurred laws and imitation rights but everyone can benefit from weaker intellectual property protection. The goal and purpose of these laws should be to learn from each other not sue X because they are using my special code to help youth upload games and interact with each other.

From reading this article, I was also able to understand the true benefit of free and open source software. Everyone can access the software, add to the software, and enjoy the use of the software stress-free. Open Source software offers numerous benefits to the community of World Wide Web users. They can become proud inventors by taking a existing program and developing the program further. So I went on a quest to find the definition of Open Source software. I desired to know what was permissible and what was unlawful with the use of the software. So here goes:

The information below was found on www.opensource.org. It details the rules and regulations of the software.

"Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in." (Quote from www.opensource.org)

Introduction

Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code. The distribution terms of open-source software must comply with the following criteria:

1. Free Redistribution

The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale.

Rationale: By constraining the license to require free redistribution, we eliminate the temptation to throw away many long-term gains in order to make a few short-term sales dollars. If we didn't do this, there would be lots of pressure for cooperators to defect.

2. Source Code

The program must include source code, and must allow distribution in source code as well as compiled form. Where some form of a product is not distributed with source code, there must be a well-publicized means of obtaining the source code for no more than a reasonable reproduction cost preferably, downloading via the Internet without charge. The source code must be the preferred form in which a programmer would modify the program. Deliberately obfuscated source code is not allowed. Intermediate forms such as the output of a preprocessor or translator are not allowed.

Rationale: We require access to un-obfuscated source code because you can't evolve programs without modifying them. Since our purpose is to make evolution easy, we require that modification be made easy.

3. Derived Works

The license must allow modifications and derived works, and must allow them to be distributed under the same terms as the license of the original software.

Rationale: The mere ability to read source isn't enough to support independent peer review and rapid evolutionary selection. For rapid evolution to happen, people need to be able to experiment with and redistribute modifications.

4. Integrity of The Author's Source Code

The license may restrict source-code from being distributed in modified form only if the license allows the distribution of "patch files" with the source code for the purpose of modifying the program at build time. The license must explicitly permit distribution of software built from modified source code. The license may require derived works to carry a different name or version number from the original software.

Rationale: Encouraging lots of improvement is a good thing, but users have a right to know who is responsible for the software they are using. Authors and maintainers have reciprocal right to know what they're being asked to support and protect their reputations.

Accordingly, an open-source license must guarantee that source be readily available, but may require that it be distributed as pristine base sources plus patches. In this way, "unofficial" changes can be made available but readily distinguished from the base source.

5. No Discrimination Against Persons or Groups

The license must not discriminate against any person or group of persons.

Rationale: In order to get the maximum benefit from the process, the maximum diversity of persons and groups should be equally eligible to contribute to open sources. Therefore we forbid any open-source license from locking anybody out of the process.

Some countries, including the United States, have export restrictions for certain types of software. An OSD-conformant license may warn licensees of applicable restrictions and remind them that they are obliged to obey the law; however, it may not incorporate such restrictions itself.

6. No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor

The license must not restrict anyone from making use of the program in a specific field of endeavor. For example, it may not restrict the program from being used in a business, or from being used for genetic research.

Rationale: The major intention of this clause is to prohibit license traps that prevent open source from being used commercially. We want commercial users to join our community, not feel excluded from it.

7. Distribution of License

The rights attached to the program must apply to all to whom the program is redistributed without the need for execution of an additional license by those parties.

Rationale: This clause is intended to forbid closing up software by indirect means such as requiring a non-disclosure agreement.

8. License Must Not Be Specific to a Product

The rights attached to the program must not depend on the program's being part of a particular software distribution. If the program is extracted from that distribution and used or distributed within the terms of the program's license, all parties to whom the program is redistributed should have the same rights as those that are granted in conjunction with the original software distribution.

Rationale: This clause forecloses yet another class of license traps.

9. License Must Not Restrict Other Software

The license must not place restrictions on other software that is distributed along with the licensed software. For example, the license must not insist that all other programs distributed on the same medium must be open-source software.

Rationale: Distributors of open-source software have the right to make their own choices about their own software.

Yes, the GPL is conformant with this requirement. Software linked with GPLed libraries only inherits the GPL if it forms a single work, not any software with which they are merely distributed.

10. License Must Be Technology-Neutral

No provision of the license may be predicated on any individual technology or style of interface.

Rationale: This provision is aimed specifically at licenses which require an explicit gesture of assent in order to establish a contract between licensor and licensee. Provisions mandating so-called "click-wrap" may conflict with important methods of software distribution such as FTP download, CD-ROM anthologies, and web mirroring; such provisions may also hinder code re-use. Conformant licenses must allow for the possibility that (a) redistribution of the software will take place over non-Web channels that do not support click-wrapping of the download, and that (b) the covered code (or re-used portions of covered code) may run in a non-GUI environment that cannot support popup dialogues.

Create a Museum...Be an architect for a day!

"Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context-a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan."
Leonard Baskin

Frederick R. I will provide an interactive website that explores the architecture of a few world-famous landmarks such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and various art museums. Students will build a stronger knowledge of world history, and the 'art' in architecture. Students will also be encouraged to observe how buildings define the space around them. I plan to provide questions for each landmark to inspire the students to look closer and consider the materials used to create the exterior of the museum and how the museum functions in the environment. Example of questions: Is there a correlation between the architecture of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao Spain and the Cubism period? Is the New Museum in Manhattan, NY inspired by German Expressionism? What inspired the creation of the Lentos Art Museum Linz in Austria? There will be quick links for the students to click on and access the information. The links will encourage the students to do research via the web and to broaden their use of the internet.

The interactive component will include puzzles of the buildings, crossword puzzles and a fill in the blank for review. The website will also be used to develop art vocabulary ( color, balance, composition, value, texture, perspective, light, environment, physics, mathematics, scale, exterior, interior, design, and architecture.) I am really excited about the puzzles of the buildings because that leads me to think of a visual fill in the blank.

The students will have an opportunity to become architects and create their own museum via the website. I am currently searching for an Open Source software so that the students can build a 3d museum online, focusing on the exterior only. The software would ideally be introduced in the classroom and available on the website for participation outside of the classroom. If I do not find the software, I will develop a 3d project for the students to create a museum with tangible materials.

I believe it is important for the students to share their ideas and finished projects online. After the students finish their virtual 3d museum creations I will upload the photos to the website. There will be a student gallery tab, interactive tab, information tab, blog tab and home tab. Another characteristic of the website is accommodation to low vision students. The website would offer high contrast, enlarged print, and various color options.

Purpose: To impact the lesson in the classroom and help the students further their understanding of the lesson. The website will serve as a source of extra credit for the students. The students will be highly encouraged to participate. If the students interact with the website by building a 3d model of a museum (virtually or by using traditional materials) and/or completing the crossword puzzle they are eligible to receive extra credit for the quarter.

Audience: Middle to High School Students.

Google...Inquiry.

Although, I finished reading the article and understood the majority of the text I had one question or maybe two. But the question that looped through my brain continuously was(drumroll)...What does that mean? Words and phrases like: hypertext, hypermedia, computer hobbyist, CCXlceptUal framework, HTML, HTTP, Usenet, Trojan Room Coffee Pot, JenniCam and ARPANET.

I began to Google everything. I was on a quest to find out more information to deepen my understanding of the article (The Internet and the World Wide Web by Jeremy G. Butler). Ok here goes...

Hypertext- A database system that enables text, music, pictures, programs and so on to be linked to each other. Hypertext is useful for organizing and browsing large databases that consist of various types of information.

Hypermedia- A database system that broadens the idea of hypertext. Hypermedia enables any set of multimedia objects to be linked together such as sound, motion video and virtual reality.

Computer Hobbyist- A person who is fascinated with computer technology. A computer hobbyist's entire life revolves around computers. Computer hobbyist are not just consumers but builders also. They build machines just for the sake of building and not for profit. They attend computer shows with the hope to admire new parts and not to be pressured into buying.

An anonymous computer hobbyist on PC Mag.com stated, "Perhaps the hobbyist is not gone, but merely changed...Many of us are still hobbyists, but the hobby is different. We build stuff to DO stuff, whereas before we built it to build it. I still go to computer shows and buy parts, as do some of my friends. We still take pleasure in just building machines. Of course, the shows are a great place to see just how much things have changed...the people attending the shows are different, perhaps more 'consumer' than 'hobbyist', and the vendors are completely alien to what we had in the 80's (where the typical vendor was someone just as fascinated with the technology as yourself, who would talk with you for hours if you let them, rather than someone looking for a quick buck and offering no service). It really has shifted from a 'system' perspective to a 'use' perspective. 'They joy of figuring things out' has been supplanted by the need to have access and the need to have a 'better rig' than everyone else. In part, perhaps, the PC hobby has been destroyed by the MicroSoft mentality...their obscene business tactics have not only tainted other areas of business in America, it has generated a similar 'must conquer all others' mentality in users as well. Most people conform to the MS way of doing things, and desire the 'standard' system: Windows and Word. And the hobbyist types have also fallen into that W&W approach to PC's, except the ones I mentioned above."

CCXlceptUal framework- Unfortunately, I could not find anything on CCXL framework.

HTML- HTML is the acronym for Hypertext Markup Language. HTML is a computer language that enables website creation through a series of short codes.

HTTP- HTTP is the acronym for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. As soon as you access a website, you are indirectly using HTTP. It is a set of rules for transferring files such as text, sound, video, and other multimedia files on the World Wide Web.

Usenet- Usenet is a worldwide system of discussion groups in which millions can participate for free.

Trojan Room Coffee Pot- It was a project that used a camera to capture a coffee pot every few seconds at various resolutions. Jennifer is known as a conceptual artist.

ARPANET- ARPANET is an acronym for Advanced Research Projects Agency Net. ARPANET is the forerunner to the Internet and originally funded by the Defense Department. It was an experimental network developed by the US Department of Defense in the late 1960s. It was used to create a communications link that would allow ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) scientists and research contractors to share their resources and ideas. The network was created to survive breakdown in case of a nuclear attack.

The Bright Screen...The Internet and Beyond

Commercial after commercial after commercial. Normally, when the commercials come on I buzz around the house searching for something to do. But a few days ago, the avoidable commercials peeped through my screen and fell into my lap. I was sitting in a room with a small crowd of people. I was watching a show about a wolf man and his girlfriend. The couple studies wolves for research. They both eat, howl, and maneuver like wolves. But anyway, every 20 to 30 minutes a commercial would glide across the television screen. I realized that every single commercial is an advertisement for medication, toys, mouthwash, etc. The commercial nearly forces an onlooker to purchase Colgate whitening toothpaste or to buy FiberOne cereal. I pitied the young man or young woman, who is persuaded by these ads. Christmas season must be agonizing for a parent. "I want this, I want that." I can hear the voice of an innocent, and unaware child at this very moment. I can recall that voice so clearly because I was once that child. Deep down inside I wanted everything, asking for 80 percent of my wishes only hoping for 20 percent. I was reading the article assigned to the class, and I came across a section that struck me. I can not control the commercials that flood my television screen. The standard remote is useful for switching channels but useless for zooming by commercials. The world wide web offers something new and refreshing: CONTROL. When I go on the internet I pick and choose what I want to read, watch, play, etc. I am not bombarded by annoying advertisements that try to tell me how to think, what to wear, what toothpaste to use, or what is the best medication to take for heartburn. I simply search Google, type in my inquiry, and results appear within seconds. I am free. Just a quick question regarding video media. Why do Internet users still have trouble watching videos over the web?

Paint Histogram Open Tools Options Shop- The World of Photoshop for Educators

Quick facts about the creation of Adobe Photoshop:

o In the fall of 1987 Thomas Knoll was trying to write a computer code to display grayscale images on a black-white bitmap monitor for his doctoral in computer vision. A bitmap is an image composed with pixels. To accomplish this piece the artist used CorelDraw and Photoshop. On the artist's website there are directions on how to scan in drawings, how to transfer files from one software to another and how to color the image. The only downside is that the artist does not offer technical details to his instruction. For instance, when the artist is describing how to re-adjust the color in a image during the transfer of an image to a different software, the artist does not tell the audience the tool to use. Click here for instructions by Matthew James Taylor.

This piece is titled "Kristine as Bachelorette." Ubuntu means humanity to others. The most amazing feature of this company is that everything is available free of charge. I think a pro for this software is the users capability to mold the software to fit whomever wishes to use it. This is definitely a pro for educators. As an educator, one will teach students off all different backgrounds and learning abilities. There is usually two versions of the software available: one that is a concrete version and the other a work in progress. Edubuntu alerts consumers of updates and releases. A new version is released every six months. Predictability can work in an educator's favor. The program seems diverse, applicable and accessible. I have not found any cons just yet. I am currently still looking. The software is very teacher friendly and encourages revisions. I guess the only con would be a lack computers in the classroom.

Okay, after a few more clicks I have found some cons. If you request to order by CD it will take ten weeks. If the computer is not able to download large images, you would have to buy a CD or DVD through Amazon.com. The price is $12.99. The cost may pose a problem if you have to purchase more than one for multiple computers. When I attempted to download the software, I encountered a small problem. I was asked to choose a location near me but none of the options were familiar. As an educator, I would have to do a little more work than expected.

OpenCourseWare Consortium http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/about/about/index.htm :

Although this site was a little confusing, I searched and found some really cool features. The software is open to the world but the institution must join. There is a list of requirements to join as a member. From what I read the site makes coursework, readings and etc. open to members. The students do not have to buy textbooks. The site offers free course material. OCW makes education accessible to all. There is a link to read about students in countries like Zambia. The student was thankful. He said before OCW was introduced to the college, it was hard to get an internet connection. Now, it is easy for professors to access educational resources without long waits. Students who do not have excellent resources or internet access benefit from this site the most. A student shared that he did not really understand a topic presented in class. He was in the library and found a CD about OCW but the library would not give him a copy. He copied the web address and accessed the site from home. The student was able to find review questions and a course outline. This site is amazing. The pro for this site is that education is available to a diverse population worldwide. The con is that the site seems to be catered towards a certain field. Another pro is that the site has course work on over 20 majors. The con is that the information is outdated. Some of the information was published in 2003. For example, there is a course titled Brain Laboratory. It was published in Spring 2002. I am quite sure the neurological field has advanced since 2002. I hope that some of the information the students are accessing is still useful. For instance, the readings that are assigned to some of the courses may be outdated. Another con is the sites audience is limited to college students and educators.

Environmental Artist...a quick look at Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

A moment of reflection: I have to admit the digital world is kind of scary. Your work can be deleted and erased so quickly. With a drawing or painting, an artist has to rework the surface, with Photoshop an artist can create a new layer. Ha Ha! I am seriously laughing out loud. What happened to sweating by the brow to create a masterpiece? How does an educator teach a tool they are not comfortable with using themselves????

While taking a break from pondering the usefulness of digital software, I found Earth From The Air http://www.wecommunic8.com/EarthFromTheAir/Info/Poetry/default.aspx. The work featured on the website was captured by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Each landscape featured on this blog and on the official website was created by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. For ten years the artist carefully researched the landscapes. The artist researched 76 countries and managed to clock 3,000 flying hours by helicopter. I enjoyed this website because it has a link for educators (http://www.wecommunic8.com/EarthFromTheAir/Info/Education.asp). The site provides downloadable teaching cards for the classroom. Each card features a photograph of the Earth and a fact. For example, the photo below may be accompanied by this fact: "Over half of world coral reefs are endangered."

It is worth checking out if you get a chance. The site also offers important facts about the earth and helpful tips if you are trying to go organic. : )

Blogging, not so uncool!

While surfing the web I came across a few really cool blog sites. They are listed below.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has a blog titled, Eye Level. It is really engaging. The blog that really caught my eye was about the movie Night at the Museum. The author relates the movie to artworks in the museum. The author even offers a thought provoking question: "What work of art would you choose for your very own Night at the Museum experience?" (Smithsonian American Art Museum) Eye Level talks about the latest art news but offers valid opinions and inspiration. Before leaving a comment they instruct the reader to keep in mind that any comments that are unrelated to the blog will not be published. Reading that reminded me of the article in which Jill Walker talks about the importance of reviewing blogs in a respectful manner. She reminds readers and students that it is important to remember that the blogger is a real person with real feelings. I think for the most part Walker thinks that it is important to be courteous to fellow bloggers. The blogger does have the ability to reciprocate the same response. Vegard Johansen made a good point about not commenting on blogs if you do not have a positive remark to make. I think that Johansen and Walker stressed the importance of constructive criticism done in a respectful manner. I believe people benefit from criticism or advice when it is helpful as opposed to outlandish, rude, and insidious.

As a learning tool, the blog has the potential to grasp the attention of many. The writing style is comprehensive. The blogger uses photographs and provides links to other websites. The learning does not stop at the website but extends to other sites. The blogger asks the reader questions that are not complex but help the reader better understand the content of the article. The blog presents the Smithsonian American Art Museum as an informal learning environment.

The blog also talks about upcoming shows and the impact on the community. This site is really rich with information and insight into the museum world. There is even a blog featuring Bill Viola, where he talks about his experiences with technology, art, science, and life. Bill Viola states, "Like it or not we are woven together in a way that has not happened in human history."

http://eyelevel.si.edu

(Bill Viola, Three Women, 2008, color high-definition video on plasma display mounted on wall; performers: Anika, Cornelia, Helena Ballent, Photo: Kira Perov)

The next blog site I found was truly informative. At first while I was browsing, I began to think to myself this blogger is really technical. The blog was swarming with information. It was too much to digest at one time so I began to skim through the collection. I landed upon a blog titled, Let’s Just Scare the #$%& Out of Them, Ok? It was published on August 22, 2008. The blogger talked about the dangers of networks such as MySpace. A police officer went to a high school with photos of a student. Before speaking to the student body he asked for a particular student to identify herself. Then he proceeded to show photos from her MySpace page to the whole student body. The student dashed out of the assembly in tears. The police officer embarrassed her. He justified his actions by telling a story of a young lady who was taken advantage of on MySpace. She was abducted, raped and killed because she was unaware of the dangers of social networking.

I agree that it is more beneficial for the students if the teachers educate them on the dangers of social networking. The blogger offers a suggestion to teachers: "Go to your principal or superintendent right now and ask her/him this: Would you really rather have your students learn about safety online from some “authority” figure who drops in and attempts to make them fearful, or from people who they know and trust and see every day in their classrooms who over the course of time in appropriate and balanced ways can educate them instead?" (http://weblogg-ed.com)

Weblogg-ed made me aware of the potential dangers in cyberspace and social networking. I also learned the importance of the teacher informing the students of the pros and cons of the World Wide Web. The architecture of the blog was kind of bland but the writing was well articulated. It wasn't an easy read due to the lack of pictures and variation in text but I did enjoy the speech bubbles, where the blogger is highlighting key points of the post. The blogger is educating teachers on the importance of technology in the classroom. At some points the blogger rambles on and on until he gets to the vital info. The rambling is something I find characteristic of some blogs I have browsed through. There are few parameters, the author has total control over the direction of the blog and has the freedom to be inconsistent in the post. There should be accountability of some sort. I believe the author should acknowledge his or her readers by writing posts that flow cohesively.

The Coolest Website Ever

http://kidzartblog.com/

I think this was the most comprehensive and engaging blog of all time.

The intended audience is parents of students, and educators who are looking for creative resources. The site is filled with easy lessons such as creating sculptural art using recyclable materials, tips on setting up a home studio, and the benefits of art in schools.

Excerpt from website http://kidzartblog.com: "At KidzArt, we’re committed to developing your child’s resourcefulness, imagination and originality to make them the innovators of tomorrow. Let us know your ideas and the different ways that you inspire your children to use their creative thinking and problem solving skills." I believe that KidzArt has developed a friendly site. The blog entries do not bombard you with information. There is adequate visual space between entries. The site uses pictures to show happy children presenting their artwork to the world. I think the pictures also illustrate confident children that are proud of their creations. In relation to participatory culture KidzArt creates a art community that consists of parents and teachers. This community is accessible by both groups. I believe this site can be used for networking and collective intelligence. The creators of this site want parents, children and teachers to be active in the art community. There is even a link on the left side of the page that allows you to search for art classes near you. There is a link to a parent's website, http://www.lovelongandprosper.com/cherylyn/?p=161, where she is videotaping herself and her son explaining an art piece.

Unwrapping the Benefits of Digital Media in the Art Classroom

Normally, when I use the term digital media I am referring to videos, graphic design, movies, and so on. From reading the article I learned that digital media is an unavoidable art form. The world is advancing at a very fast pace and many new things are being discovered by the use of a computer.

I believe that digital media should play a very important role in the art classroom. This past weekend I ran into an old friend. He will graduate from high school in May of 2009. He told me that he wanted to take digital art as a junior but instead was forced to take Drawing and Painting 1 as a prerequisite. I began to ponder the bridge between digital media and traditional art tools. Why was it important for him to take Drawing and Painting 1 first? I am quite sure there are many techniques and skills that he can learn beforehand that will enrich his experience in digital media. But why was it a requirement? From his unfortunate experiences with traditional tools and I am shocked that he was still inspired to take the Digital Art class. His willingness to take Drawing and Painting 1 as the first step to taking Digital Art got me thinking about the participatory culture. I know many high school students that are members of MySpace and Facebook. They enjoy uploading pictures that have been manipulated. They are adventurous adolescents that play with the color, line, and shape of the subject in the photograph.

Was my old friend apart of this participatory culture? Is that the reason for his headstrong decision to take Digital Art? I believe that digital media plays a huge role in the art classroom today. The art classroom should facilitate the appropriate learning tools and professional instruction for the youth today. If the students are involved in participatory culture, why not use their interest to create an informative learning environment. A lot of the ideas in the article kind of went over my head but I do believe that some of the things mentioned are attainable. I enjoyed the article. I believe that as teachers we have to at least try to keep up with the fast-paced changes in the technological world today. We can use games, software, and the Internet to build social skills, problem-solving skills, a healthy identity and aesthetic of the social world.

This semester I hope to learn the purpose and the benefits of teaching Digital Art. I have always dreamed of being proficient in Photoshop and Final Cut Pro just to name a few. I truly would appreciate a demo on software such as Corel Painter X, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe 9 (learning how to send and create files in Adobe, pdf), and much more. I would like to be knowledgeable of the Digital World. I can imagine a student knowing more than me about a program. How can I facilitate learning for the student if I don’t even know the software well enough to provide basic instruction?

I have taken three Digital classes since I’ve been at the Corcoran: Design with Pat, Digital Photography with Kim and Digital Art with Bill Newman. I have spent hours in front of Illustrator and Photoshop and still have not grasped the basic fundamentals. It is amazing. I often wonder how I completed all of those projects. I constantly question why I didn’t retain the information and tools taught during the class. I could open the application for Illustrator and immediately freeze, not knowing how to set up a template or to create an awesome piece like the digital art masters that I read about in art magazines.

My most enjoyabe memory of Digital Art class with Bill Newman was the day we printed on canvas. I was so excited. We were able to create a piece without many demands on how the piece should look. Bill gave us many options, we could print a line drawing on the canvas and then paint the piece or we could attempt to create something that looked like a painting. That class was a lot of fun. I believe that I benefited from that class because it was open to interpretation. I did not retain a lot of “how-to’s.” I think the purpose was to explore and learn through constructive play.
